Menopause is a natural part of the aging process that occurs when a woman's ovaries stop producing the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones regulate the menstrual cycle and are responsible for the release of an egg every month (ovulation). Once a woman is in Menopause she will stop menstruating and her period of fertility ends since she will no longer ovulate. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55.
Women who are unsure if they are in Menopause or going through Perimenopause (the time leading up to Menopause when hormone levels start to diminish), can ask for a blood test that measures follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH is the hormone that causes the ovaries to produce estrogen. FSH levels rise as estrogen levels decrease. Women who have FSH levels above 30 or 40 mIU/mL are usually in Menopause.
If Menopause occurs before the age of 40 it is considered "premature Menopause," also called premature ovarian failure (POF). Certain genetic conditions, autoimmune disorders and treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation that may have damaged the ovaries can cause premature Menopause. Premature Menopause will also occur if the ovaries have been surgically removed. In many cases, the causes of premature Menopause cannot be determined. Women who have premature Menopause experience the same symptoms as those who go through Menopause at an older age.
